LHB's Story

How we started...

In 1990, Mike Layton, a second-generation carpenter, started his own business offering framing, siding, window/door installation, and renovation services.  Over the next twelve years, he fostered a reputation in the Edenton community as a dependable, hardworking, and honest businessman.  Both of his sons were involved at a young age with the business and developed a love for carpentry like their father. 

Mike’s oldest son, Chris Layton, has worked with his father since he was old enough to carry a hammer.  He earned a degree in Architectural Technology from Pitt Community College in 2001 and graduated from East Carolina University in 2002 with a degree in Construction Management and a minor in business.  In January 2003, Chris obtained a NC Unlimited Contractor's License.  At that time, he expanded his father's business, creating Layton Home Builders, inc.  Since then, Chris has served as designer and project manager on all builds.

A.J. Layton, Mike’s youngest son, is also an integral part of the business, bringing a degree in Business Administration from Campbell University.  His love of carpentry has crafted him into a superior finish carpenter to provide excellent quality to our homes.

Rana Layton, joined in 2019 to provide a complete hands-on experience with design.  She also graduated from East Carolina University and has always had a love for interior design.  She guides our customers with the selection of fixtures, cabinets, flooring, and colors.  Rana is also an integral part of the home design process, bringing brilliant solutions to balance and style.

Mike has recently retired and left the company to his family's hands and helps when needed.​ Jan Layton, his wife, has been with the company since its creation and continues to be our office manager.  

Chris along with his wife, Rana, currently own and operate Layton Home Builders, continuing to provide outstanding quality and craftmanship on custom homes around the Edenton area.
